1 CD album DigiPac (4 pages) with 44-page booklet, 18 tracks, playing time: 61:17.
Over an hour (completely) new sounds by Gunter Gabriel, own texts and works of renowned German writers. The topics are nostalgia & romance, faith, love & hope. There is also a new cover version of a Johnny Cash song. Elke Heidenreich has written a short introduction.
The 30-ton diesel engine has long since been scrapped, Willy Klein, the retired TV man, and the CD radio operator is no longer broadcasting. Titles that - like many others - made Gunter Gabriel popular over 30 years ago - as a singer of trucker and man-on-the-street songs, but always slightly jovial and rumbling.
There was no place for more contemplative thoughts about nostalgia and about faith, love and hope. Now a'different Gunter Gabriel' speaks out, with a brand new CD full of new, rather unusual sounds. My other self' already nominally indicates the current direction: Where in former times the hammer was swung in the hand, dad drinks beer and nothing was announced flat Without moss, the 68-year-old singer, guitarist and composer presents himself as a credible interpreter of quiet, partly thoughtful songs.
Songs like The Old Man and his big house, Who has nothing more to lose, Outside the door and others signal already in the title: Here one steps on the brake, looks back inward, takes stock. Gunter Gabriel prefers his own works, but also uses works by renowned German lyricists and composers such as Norman Ascot (Hallo, mein Freund), Zimmermann/Weigel (Fünf Uhr Morgens) and Joachim Heider: Gunter Gabriel has written a German text for an original (Man In Black) of his great American role model, Der Mann hinterm Pflug.
Gunter Gabriel's ties to the US country grandmaster are too close for him to have done without a cash song on this new CD: after all, the musical'Hello, I'm Johnny Cash' was shown to sold-out houses in autumn 2010 and has since found no less successful sequels.
Whoever hears'My Other Self' experiences Gunter Gabriel purified in many ways - but without neglecting the characteristics characteristic of this artist: compositional qualities and the sincere implementation of what moves him in content. Gunter Gabriel has cracked his own hard shell - and allows glances at the soft core, at his'other self'.
