Episode 5 of our retrospective focuses on Great Britain. The episode is dedicated to 4 American soloists of the early 60's. Performers from London and Coventry, from the Isle Of Wight, from Wales and many others have their say here.
The musical situation on the island was different from that in the United States. After Crooner, Skiffle and Trad-Jazz bands as well as instrumental formations had swung the sceptre for years, four young guys from Liverpool put everything that had been there upside down within a short time: Yeah, yeah, yeah, the beat fever was rampant ! Hundreds of new bands reached for the stars, not a few burned their fingers. Nevertheless: The incredible success of many combos had serious consequences for almost all established soloists of the early sixties - so to speak overnight they seemed old in the eyes (and above all ears) of the younger fans, a little antiquated. In quite a few cases - clearly visible in the charts - long 'hit chains' around 1963 suddenly broke off, at best they could still place themselves for some time in the lower regions of the lists.
For these performers, recordings in languages other than their own were often a last 'crutch' to resist the threat of slippage. Not only outsiders like Dick Scott, Ken Morris or Alan Corb were affected - even established aces and success guarantors like Adam Faith, John Leyton, Jimmy Justice, Craig Douglas or Eden Kane had to deal with the new circumstances. Also Anthony Newley or a Karl Denver (not yet represented on this CD, we are working on it!) suddenly had to 'pedal'.
Nevertheless, this offer is a rarity revue without equal: Only one of the 24 rare and popular tracks is already available on official CD ! With Oh Caroline by Adam Faith, we were also able to track down a song that had been stored unnoticed in the archives for 39 years. And a candy for all James Bond collectors might be Feuerball, the hardly known German version of the movie title song, interpreted here by Alan Corb.
